Why are you involved with Montessori Education?
We chose Montessori for our children because of the underlying philosophy of “follow the child”. This approach allows children to be individuals, and to use their personal passions as ignition in the learning process.
What year did you commence at Montessori International College?
I was originally here for 4 years as a parent, including lots of volunteer work through the Parent Ambassador Program. 2017 was my first year in an “ïnside” position.
How would you describe what you do?
As Librarian, my task is to leverage the power of words to help expand the students beyond their current experience. The library inspires the students by inviting them to seek and understand the stories and knowledge contained in the words and to dream their own dreams from there. Also to ground them, reminding them that we all stand on the shoulders of giants, and to acknowledge the source of their inspiration as they take their own work out into the world. In other words, information literacy and academic honesty.
In practical terms, this looks like managing the resources of the library so that students and staff can find the books they need for learning, teaching, interest or pleasure. And assisting the IB students particularly with effective literature research and appropriate source crediting.
What’s your favourite thing about your role?
The MIC LIbrary is full of fabulous and fascinating books on pretty much the whole range of subjects (LOTS of animal books!). I love to help the children find something that will both inform and delight, whether for research or pleasure – and hopefully both.
